Terms of Service

1. The agreement

By using BestFriend you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the app. BestFriend is published by Henry Love (individual). The optional account and cloud backup service are operated by Odd Community LLC. "We" and "us" cover both, as applicable.

2. What BestFriend is

A private, local-first app for keeping up with a small circle of close friends.

BestFriend is free. It contains no in-app purchases. Every feature — adding friends (unlimited), satellites, engagement logging, contact status, reminders and the relationship graph — works with no account, no email address and no payment, indefinitely.

3. Your data is yours

We claim no ownership of anything you put into BestFriend. By default it never leaves your device. If you enable encrypted backup, you grant us only the narrow permission to store and transmit the encrypted blob your device produces, for the purpose of giving it back to you. We cannot read it.

4. Your responsibilities

• Keep your device and your recovery phrase secure.
• Only record information about other people that you are entitled to record, and use it for your own personal purposes.
• Do not attempt to break, reverse-engineer for circumvention, or overload the service.

5. Recovery phrase — read this one

The recovery phrase is the only key to your encrypted backup. We do not have a copy and we cannot reset it. If you lose it, your backup cannot be recovered by us, by you, or by anyone. This is the price of end-to-end encryption and we will not pretend otherwise.

6. Accounts and cloud backup

• Creating an account is optional. Its only purpose is to enable cloud backup of your data. It enables no other features of the app.
• How much we back up depends on your account's backup capacity. Some accounts back up your first 5 friends; others back up your whole roster.
• Friends beyond what is backed up remain stored on your device permanently and at no cost. Local use of the app is always unlimited and always free, with or without an account. Nothing you add is ever deleted or blocked because of your account state.
• Backup capacity is a property of an Odd account, which covers more than this app. It is arranged and managed outside BestFriend. Nothing is sold or offered within the app.
• Because we sell nothing through the app, questions about cancelling or obtaining a refund for any service arranged elsewhere are handled by whoever sold it to you, under their terms.

7. Termination

You may stop using the app and delete your account at any time from within the app. We may suspend accounts that abuse the service or breach these terms.

8. No warranty; limitation of liability

The app is provided "as is". To the maximum extent permitted by law we disclaim implied warranties, and our aggregate liability is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including your statutory consumer rights.

9. Changes

We may update these terms and will update the date above. Material changes will be surfaced in the app before they take effect.
